Fatal house fire near Picton

A person has died in a house fire near Picton.

Around 4:30 this morning, Emergency services were called to a property at the intersection of Menangle and Picton Roads, Razorback where they found a home engulfed in flames.

Officers from the Camden Police Area Command attended along with Fire and Rescue NSW.

The blaze was extinguished, however, the occupant was found dead inside.

They're yet to be formally identified.

A crime scene has been set up, which will be examined by specialist forensic police.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Festival returns to Illuminate Wollondilly

As part of the highly anticipated return of the Illuminate Wollondilly Festival of Art and Light next month, residents and visitors are invited to enjoy a long table dinner in the Picton Botanic Gardens.

They will come to life with lights and a spectacular illuminated sculpture and lantern display on Friday, May 20, with the long table dinner taking centre stage under the Avenue of Trees.

Attendees will be treated to a four-course dinner served by The Chef and I, accompanied by beverages and live entertainment by singer Karleigh Rose.

She has been performing professionally at weddings and events for more than 10 years, and will present a selection of easy listening music to complement the beautiful surroundings.

Wollondilly Mayor Matt Gould said he was looking forward to seeing people take part this special evening as part of the three day festival.

“After almost three years of COVID cancellations we can finally bring the Illuminate Festival back, bigger and better than ever,” he said.

“This is an opportunity to gather some of your favourite people together and be part of this unique experience at in the Picton Botanic Gardens.”

Man charged over fatal crash at Picton

A man has been charged in connection with a fatal crash at Picton.

Just before 5am on Sunday, Emergency Services were called to Picton Road near the intersection of Maldon Bridge Road, after an SUV left the road and rolled.

The male passenger of the vehicle died at the scene .

The male driver was treated by Paramedics before being taken to Liverpool Hospital for further assessment and mandatory testing.

Officers from the Camden Police Area Command were assisted by Fire and Rescue NSW.

Police set up a crime scene and – with the assistance of specialist police – commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The 23-year-old driver has since been was charged with aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death- speed >45 over limit, dangerous driving occasioning death-drive speed dangerous, dangerous driving occasioning death-drive manner dangerous and negligent driving (occasioning death).

He was refused bail and will appear before Moss Vale Local Court today.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

New fire trucks for the region

Firefighters at Mittagong and Picton have received early Christmas presents.

Two state-of-the-art firefighting trucks have been delivered to both Fire and Rescue NSW stations.

They each include a Compressed Air Foam System which enables firefighters to tackle structural, chemical, petrol and grass fires using up to five times less water than normal

This is done by combining foam concentrate with compressed air to fire hoses.

Each truck cost $470,000 and Member for Wollondilly Nathaniel Smith believes they'll both enhance emergency operations across the Southern Highlands region.

NSW detectives investigate silver bullion heist worth over one million dollars

Robbery and Serious Crime Squad detectives are appealing for information after silver bullion valued at $1 million was stolen from a truck travelling between Sydney and Melbourne while on the Highlands.

Between 4.30pm on Friday 26 November 2021 and 8am on Monday 29 November 2021, a consignment of silver disappeared from a truck while in transit from Maldon, near Picton, to Melbourne in Victoria.

The theft was only discovered when the truck arrived in Melbourne.

Officers from Camden Police Area Command were notified.

The consignment, made up of 192 individual 5kg bars,  was being transported by a Kenworth truck and silver Krueger trailer.

The silver bullion is estimated to be worth $1,015,000.

Following initial investigations by local police,  State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad detectives took carriage of the investigation under Strike Force Caimon.

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the incident, or who may have seen the Kenworth truck and Krueger trailer while in transit, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Serious crash on Hume Highway

Emergency services have been called to a serious two vehicle crash along the Hume Highway north of Picton Road.

Such was the force of the crash, that one vehcile was split in half.

All of the occupants managed to be freed.

One man was taken to hospital for further treatment.

Picton Fire and Rescue responded along with the Wilton Volunteer Rural Fire Brigade, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command - NSW Police Force and NSW Paramedics.

Serious crash on Remembrance Drive

Emergency Services have been called to a serious crash at Razorback.

Around 7am yesterday, two cars collided on Remembrance Drive, near Pepper Tree Ridge.

Fire fighters from Picton Fire and Rescue worked for an hour to free a 74 year old man who was trapped in one of the vehicles

He was airlifted to hospital with critical injuries.

Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Suspect vehicle identified in great silver bullion heist

Detectives have released further CCTV and are renewing their appeal for information, as investigations continue into the theft of silver bullion valued at $1 million from a truck travelling between Sydney and Melbourne.

Between 4.30pm on Friday 26 November 2021 and 8am on Monday 29 November 2021, a consignment of silver was allegedly stolen from a truck while in transit from Maldon, near Picton, to Melbourne in Victoria.

Upon arrival in Melbourne, the theft was discovered and officers from Camden Police Area Command were notified.

The silver bullion is estimated to be valued at $1,015,000.

Following initial investigations by local police, detectives from the State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad took carriage of the investigation under Strike Force Caimon.

In December 2021, Strike Force Caimon detectives released an image of one of the missing silver bullion bars and the packaging in which they were stored.

Following further investigations, police have now released CCTV vision of a vehicle of interest, a dark coloured Toyota Landcruiser utility that was seen travelling on Argyle Street at Picton about 12.20am on Sunday 28 November 2021.

Detectives are urging anyone who may have information about the occupants or movements of the vehicles to come forward immediately.

Investigations under Strike Force Caimon continue.
