The Southern Highlands Greens have announced Heather Champion will be their lead candidate for the Wingecarribee Shire Council elections in September.

Heather lives in Mittagong with her partner, three-year-old daughter, dog and six chooks.

“We all know the Highlands deserves something really new in our local government, it’s time for a complete refresh,” said Heather. “That’s why I’m running for Council: because we need a new kind of councillor.”

“Younger people, women and parents with young kids have been almost totally unrepresented in our local government for far too long. This year we will finally have an opportunity to turn that around, and bring in some energy, optimism and fresh vision for the future.”

Heather has spent over a decade working to support women’s safety and economic equality, including in Australia, Ireland and Bangladesh.

“We can make the Highlands a place where we don’t just build houses, we build community. Locals already have great ideas for positive change, we just need to work together.”

“Everyone should have a chance to enjoy nature, parks, music, sports and art – and build connections with each other in the process.”

“We can provide much better support for young people, families and those who are struggling with housing affordability.”

Heather also wants to make sure that every Council decision considers long-term impacts on our environment.

“We need to be taking much bolder local climate action, protecting our incredible biodiversity, and being very careful to plan for sustainable housing and development design. Caring for our piece of country means it will be there to enjoy for generations to come.”

The Greens are working with people from around the Highlands to develop their 2024 local government policy platform.
