You Could Be Owed Money Without Knowing It

Hundreds of thousands of people across New South Wales may be entitled to a share of around $300 million in unclaimed money, currently held by Revenue NSW. The funds come from things like uncashed cheques, refunds, overpaid bills, dividends, and dormant bank accounts that were never successfully returned to their owners.

Where Is the Money Coming From?

Unclaimed money often builds up when people move house, change their contact details, or forget about old accounts. In some cases, money is left behind after a person passes away, and their estate makes no claim. Revenue NSW now holds more than 800,000 individual payments, ranging from a few dollars to thousands, or even more.

Which Areas Are Most Affected?

Sydney’s city and eastern suburbs have the largest amount of unclaimed funds, followed by Western Sydney, the Central Coast and the Hunter region. Even people who no longer live in NSW may still be owed money if they previously lived or worked in the state.

How to Check if You’re Owed Money

Residents can search the Revenue NSW unclaimed money register online for free. If you find a match, you can submit a claim by confirming your identity. For many people, the process is simple and could result in an unexpected financial boost.
