Wild winds cause weekend havoc

The Weather Bureau has issued a strong wind warning for Shoalhaven Coastal waters but has cancelled a land wind warning after a wild winds lashed the Shoalhaven during the weekend.

Gusts in excess of 95 kph were reported around Nowra.

On the Southern Highlands at Moss Vale winds reached 80 kph although the Weather Bureau said winds sheers in some areas of the Shoalhaven well in excess of that.

Statewide, the SES responded to 297 call-outs and over 200 of those in the South East region.

The majority of call-outs were reported in the Nowra, Bomaderry, Berry areas, St Georges Basin and Ulladulla were also impacted.

Crews responded to multiple reports of fallen trees and branches.

The SES also reported some roofing had lifted off buildings and fences were blown over.

Endeavour Energy crews were stretched throughout the weekend dealing with widespread power outages across the region.

Fallen power lines also caused several grassfires which were extinguished by NSW RFS crews.

At the peak there were 3 and a half thousand homes with-out power but by 5am Monday the Endeavour website reports most power is back on.

The Weather Bureau has forecast the westerly winds should ease throughout Monday, but they’ll still average around 30 kph.
