Shoalhaven Councillor Paul Ell has expressed concern about the discovery of asbestos within mulch at two locations in Nowra and Bomaderry last week.
Clr Ell has called on the NSW Government to ensure that all sites which may also be impacted by the supply chain issues identified are thoroughly investigated to reassure the community.
“The discovery of asbestos at two locations last week is of enormous concern, and we need to know exactly what steps are being taken to ensure community safety.” Clr Ell said.
“I have written to the new CEO of Council asking for her to contact Transport for NSW to request an urgent briefing to be provided to Councillors and also an update to be provided to the community about this matter.”
“I know many residents are not satisfied with the information which has been provided to date- it appears that the community has been kept in the dark since the news broke last week.”
“I welcome the announcement today from the Minns Government that the number of EPA inspectors tasked with investigating asbestos contamination across NSW has been increased from 40 up to 120.
We just need to know now how many will be assigned to investigate the issues which have been identified on the South Coast.”
“There are other NSW Government projects across the South Coast which require urgent attention by the EPA. This includes works around the Shoalhaven Hospital redevelopment.”
“I am calling on the State Government to ensure that these other locations, where there may be issues, are also thoroughly investigated as a matter of urgency.”
“Asbestos poses a significant risk to community health and safety. It is absolutely imperative that the NSW Government is on the front foot about getting to the bottom of this matter and to make sure they take a proactive approach.” Clr Ell concluded
