The only sculpture in Australia by internationally renowned American artist, Barnett Newman will soon be on display in the town centre of Nowra.

Next month, Broken obelisk is relocating from the forecourt of the National Gallery in Canberra to the forecourt of the Shoalhaven Regional Gallery where it will remain for the next five years as part of the ‘Sharing the National Collection’ initiative.

The well-known, gravity-defying work is considered a masterpiece of human engineering and artistic innovation and is one of four versions in existence.

An initiative of the Federal Government’s Revive National Cultural Policy, the collection allows significant works of art to be placed in regional areas across Australia, ensuring more audiences can connect with these major artworks.

“I believe that art has the power to inspire, unite, and transform communities,” said Mayor Amanda Findley.

Broken obelisk is a shining example of this, and we’re honoured to be part of this exceptional initiative,” she said.

“Displaying Broken obelisk on the gallery’s forecourt provides an opportunity for the community to engage with this exceptional piece, fostering a deeper appreciation for art and culture.”
