Safety crackdown at coastal bars

Skippers have been warned to double check before crossing the bar.

According to New South Wales Maritime – almost half of all capsizings on our waterways in the past year have occurred at a coastal bar.

Officers chatted to more than 15 hundred boaties at locations including Narooma, Moruya, Crookhaven River, Kianinny, Yamba, South West Rocks over the long weekend to spread the safety message.

State Coordinator Damian Logue said they also handed out 200 official cautions relating to safety equipment – lifejacket use and licencing or registration.

“At the end of the day, you need to makesure that you wear a lifejacket, that you’ve checked your safety equipment and you know how to use it.

“A lifejacket may save your life at the end of the day,”Mr Logue said.
