NSW Fire and Rescue crews are monitoring the smoldering remains of an inferno that has destroyed an industrial complex at Bomaderry north of Nowra.

A total of 16 Rural Fire Service and NSW Fire and Rescue crews from as far north as Wollongong to Moruya in the south fought the blaze at the clip-lock steel and baby milk formula factory that erupted at 330 yesterday afternoon in Railway Street.

Workers managed to evacuate safely as flames took hold of the complex.

The factory warehouse contained large amounts of plastic and thick black plumes of toxic smoke spewed across the area forcing fire fighters to wear protective breathing gear.

A large fast moving grass fire was sparked by embers and added to the drama for fire fighters.

The intensity of the fire caused the roof to collapse and the walls according to NSW Fire and Rescue controller Rick Jones, “Melted like putty.”

The ‘Bronto’ large aerial appliance was used to attack the flames from above.

At this stage there’s no cause for the fire but Deputy Group Captain Jones said ” That will be subject of an investigation.”

“We have fire investigators arriving in conjunction with NSW Police and they will conduct a thorough investigation at that point,” he said.
