Riley Doherty, Water Crew Member at Wingecarribee Shire Council, was today announced winner of the Breaking Barriers Award at the 2026 Ministers’ Awards for Women in Local Government.
The Ministers’ Awards for Women in Local Government recognise outstanding staff and elected representatives whose leadership, service and commitment are helping to build stronger and more inclusive local government.
The Breaking Barriers Award recognises women who have challenged traditional career pathways and are helping to break down gender barriers and stereotypes in the workplace.
Held at NSW Parliament House, the ceremony was presented by Minister for Local Government Ron Hoenig and Minister for Women Jodie Harrison.
Riley was acknowledged as an outstanding example of a young woman challenging traditional career pathways and breaking down gender barriers within local government water operations.
At just 17 years of age, she is a Trainee Water Network crew member in Water Services and has completed her Certificate III in Water Industry Operations.
Riley demonstrates that a young woman can develop the practical skills, resilience, confidence and technical capability required to work successfully in a demanding operational environment.
She is a positive example for other young women who may consider a career in water, construction or other operational areas of local government.
Wingecarribee Shire Council General Manager Lisa Miscamble congratulated Riley.
“We are incredibly proud to see Riley’s recognised and honoured at the prestigious awards. It is a testament to her dedication, professionalism and willingness to challenge expectations, while helping to create opportunities for others.”
