Locomotive 3001 has been officially re-launched at the NSW Rail Museum in Thirlmere today.

The 120 year old steam loco was originally one of 145 ‘S class’ tank engines built in the UK for Sydney’s expanding suburban rail network.

It’s undergone an extensive three-year restoration.

Transport Heritage NSW CEO, Andrew Moritz, said smaller steam engines like 3001 once hauled passenger trains in and around the suburbs of Sydney.

“If you were travelling along the North Shore line back then, chances are an S class hauled the train to and from Milsons Point – connecting you with a ferry to the city, long before construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge,”he said.
