Ulladulla High School student Jaya Pimm is gaining a first-hand look at how Federal Parliament works this week as one of Australia’s first National Youth Parliament members.
Representing the electorate of Gilmore, Jaya is one of 150 National Youth Parliament members who will engage directly with civics and the Federal Parliament, through hands-on learning experiences, including simulated parliamentary debates from August 16-20.
On day one, Jaya took part in an unfurling of a massive Australian Flag on the roof of Parliament House, joined by her peers, Leader of the House of Representatives Milton Dick and MPs, including Federal Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips.
She told Mrs Phillips she was looking forward to gaining a deeper understanding of how Parliament worked, and watching Question Time from the gallery.
Jaya was motivated to apply for the National Youth Parliament because, she said, “the opportunity would help me grow and allow me to share knowledge”.
“I’ve always cared about issues affecting myself, others, and my community, though I’ve recently felt a bit disengaged,” she added.
“I’ve been working to improve my understanding, but I still need support.
“As a 15-year-old, I’ve recently started getting involved through the new Burrill Lake Lions Park project. I’ve been in contact with the SCC’s (Shoalhaven City Council) Councillors and Mayor to discuss.
“I believe youth civic engagement is essential, as it empowers young people to share their views, advocate and help shape the communities they live in.”
Mrs Phillips said she was proud to have Jaya as Gilmore’s representative.
“I think it’s really wonderful that we have an engaged and bright local young person keen to learn more about how our parliament works and to see first-hand how much important work goes on behind the scenes,” Mrs Phillips said.
“It was really inspiring to meet Jaya and all the young people who really want to make a difference in our nation – our future is in safe hands.”
