Member for Kiama Gareth Ward has launched an online survey on the Abortion Law Reform Amendment (Health Care Access) Bill 2025 which will come to a vote in the Legislative Assembly this week.
A copy of the survey can be found here: https://www.garethwardmp.com.au/abortionbill
Both the major parties have granted their members a conscience vote on the issue.
Whilst Mr Ward supports a woman’s right to choose and has previously voted for decriminalisation of abortion, this bill proposes allowing nurse practitioners and midwives the power to prescribe medical abortion up to 9 weeks gestation.
The power to prescribe abortion medication in NSW is currently the domain of General Practitioners.
The bill proposes a new annual report to Parliament including description of abortion services availability by region and other medical statistical data including adverse events or clinical incident reports.
“The bill as originally presented to the Legislative Council has now been heavily amended and will be presented to the Legislative Assembly this week,” Mr Ward said.
“Community consultation should never stop and start with the ballot box. I am genuinely interested in people’s views about this bill.
“Given that the Legislative Assembly will vote on this bill this week, I’m keen for people to respond to this short, sharp survey as quickly as possible,” Mr Ward concluded.
