Kiama MP Gareth Ward has slammed a protest that took place on Friday, where children were encouraged to skip school so they could take part in a nationwide protest on climate change.
The demonstrations organised in opposition to the Federal Government's policies on how it's handling carbon emissions.
Mr Ward says students should be in school.
"The protest is not going to change anything in relation to the outcomes the government may have during school hours", Mr Ward said.
"In fact, if anything it's just going to anger the public because people expect students to be in school", he said.
However, Greens Councillor Nina Digiglio is supportive of the students.
"They've got social media in front of them, they are more aware of issues in society and I think that awareness has given them a platform today, to speak out knowing what the future holds for them", Councillor Digiglio said.
