A man charged with multiple offences for allegedly setting fire to a 51-year old man at Saddleback Mountain over the weekend has been refused bail by Wollongong Local Court.

It's alleged that 42-year-old Quinton Chester Nydegger threw petrol on the man and set him alight at a Fountaindale Road property on Saturday afternoon.

The victim suffered serious burns to his face, head and chest and was flown to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition.

Nydegger didn't apply for bail which was formally refused during a brief hearing yesterday.

He'll remain in custody with his next court appearance set for August 17.
