Shoalhaven Community Preschool on the move

The Shoalhaven Community Preschool is set to be relocated to a new, purpose-built site on North Street as part of the $438 million Shoalhaven Hospital redevelopment.

The preschool's Shoalhaven Street site is set to be swallowed up in the redevelopment, but South Coast MP Shelley Hancock says it will remain open until a new facility is built behind the cancer care centre.

“The new preschool will be a bright and contemporary community early education centre that meets the National Quality Standards for children aged between three and six years of age,” said South Coast MP Shelley Hancock said

“The Shoalhaven Hospital redevelopment project team is working closely with the preschool to plan, design and construct the service to meet the needs of children, their families and staff.”

The new preschool will be constructed on the southern end of the site and will include a dedicated parking zone for carers and staff including a drop-off zone.

Preschool director Kate Morris said she was looking forward to the move.

"We're seeing this definitely as a positive, and as an opportunity to meet the needs of our community, which is growing," she said.

Ms Morris said the community's needs were at the centre of planning for the new facility.

"We are looking at what the needs are of the community, and what the funding will allow us to do," she said.

"We have a very extensive waiting list here for our community, so we're looking to be able to serve the needs into the future, not just for today.

“The relocation of our service is a great opportunity to design a preschool that addresses the specific needs of our community,” Ms Morris said.

The Shoalhaven Community Preschool has been a key part of the Nowra community for more than 50 years, and was the town's first pre-school.

In fact Ms Morris attended there as a child, as did her own children.

The preschool will remain operational at its current location until the new one is completed.

Construction of the new Shoalhaven Community Preschool is scheduled to start next year.
