Seaweed products that have been grown at Australia’s only food grade seaweed farm located in Bomaderry, and manufactured at a new factory, in Huskisson are now available on the supermarket shelves.
Doctor Pia Winberg from Phyco Health says as selection of locally produced seaweed pasta, museli, dukka and corn chips are now available at Harris Farm Markets as well as health food stores in the Shoalhaven.
Dr Winberg says more people are looking to seaweed as a sustainable, healthy food source that is high in fibre and vitamin B12.
"People are very curious about how to eat seaweed," she said.
"So now they have an opportunity to buy the products and try it for themselves."
Dr Winberg said the seaweed is grown in large tanks at Bomaderry, utilising carbon dioxide from the giant fermenters at the Manildra distillery, together with sunlight and seawater pumped from the nearby estuary.
It is processed at the new Huskisson plant which has employed a team of 10 people.
