Eftpos crash impacts thousands


Retailers are calling for changes to better protect retailers from the impacts of outages to payment services.

Telstra has apologised for the disruptions caused by a problem which knocked out ATM and EFTPOS for businesses yesterday.

The telco says early investigations suggest it was caused by an unusually large volume of traffic across network links in New South Wales.

Australian Retailers Association executive director Russell Zimmerman says there needs to be a better back-up in place to minimise disruptions: "It'd be probably mainly the banks and the telecommunications organisations and that might be just a simple one, look I'm not a technical expert, might be just as simple as being able to switch across from one particular supplier to another."
