Another effort to get deer numbers down

Gun owners across the Coast and Highlands could soon be given the go ahead to hunt deer.

The state government is  considering giving all gun licence holders the right to cull wild deer populations in a bid to reduce herd numbers.

The growing deer population has long been a problem in the ILLAWARRA, with efforts to get the numbers down having only limited success.

Under the current law, shooters need a game hunting licence although farmers do have the right to shoot deer on their properties.

But under a plan being considered by cabinet, anyone with a gun licence could take part in culling operations.
