The first stage of the Shoalhaven Hydro Expansion project has been given approval.

The state government says the decision brings thousands of homes closer to accessing clean and reliable electricity.

Origin Energy says hydro pump storage acts effectively like a giant battery, storing excess wind and solar power that can be quickly fed into the National Electricity Market when it’s needed.

Planning Minister Rob Stokes says the project will help the government achieve its net-zero emissions target by 20-50.."The entirety of the project will boost energy security NSW and to do that we need to support new and emerging technologies as well as existing technologies that we know work well, like hydro power."
