Construction is now underway on the $630 million Albion Park Rail bypass which when complete, will eliminate the only sets of traffic lights between Bomaderry and Heathcote.
13 bridges and about one million cubic metres of earthworks will be required for the mammoth task of completing the bypass.
Kiama MP Gareth Ward expects the highway to be finished towards the end of 2022, he says it will provide local job opportunities.
"In March, we'll start to see the establishment of an infrastructure skills legacy hub, similar to the one we built at Bomaderry, which will be about providing training opportunities to apprentices and trainees," Mr Ward said.
Labor has dismissed the timing of the announcement as an election stunt.
