The first sale for the year took place at the Moss Vale Saleyards yesterday.
It was a generally soft start with just 330 head sold, most of which came from the Coast and Highlands.
Alot of people who are breeding and fattening cattle are holding off and trying to add some value.
There were still some solid prices with cows ranging from $1.60 through to $1.90 a kilo depending on type, condition and weight.
The heavy export type cattle were hovering in the early $2 mark and the best trade calves got to the early $3 mark.
Ben Hindmarsh from Hindmarsh and Son says it'll be interesting to see how things pan out over the coming weeks.
