Conservation council says extinction a possibility

There are fears koalas could be extinct within 30 years if more isn't done at a state level.

The warning was contained in a submission by Stand Up for Nature to a NSW Upper House Inquiry into koala populations and habitat.

The Nature Conservation Council is calling for a three point plan to be put in place, that would include strong laws to protect our habitat, more koala habitats in National Park areas and large rescale vegetation.

It was recently revealed that we're being charged higher power prices, because energy companies have to pay a $276 million dollar levy towards the NSW Climate change fund, including funding for koalas.

But the Council's Chief Executive Chris Gambian says our koalas must be protected.
