In a mutual effort to combat plastic pollution and promote environmental awareness, Kiama Coast Holiday Parks proudly participated in ‘Take 3 for the Sea,’ during this year’s Clean Up Australia Day.
From Friday 1 March to Sunday 3 March, Seven Mile Beach Holiday Park in Gerroa NSW became the hub for an eco-friendly initiative, urging guests to make a positive impact on our beautiful coastline.
The concept behind ‘Take 3 for the Sea’ is a simple one: Take 3 pieces of rubbish with you when you leave the beach, waterway or… anywhere, and you have made a difference.
Throughout the weekend, guests were encouraged to collect three pieces of rubbish when they visited the beach or river. As a token of appreciation for their efforts, when presenting their trash-haul to Reception at Seven Mile Beach Holiday Park, we awarded over 300 participants with a free, sustainably wrapped ice cream – a way to say ‘thank you’ for cleaning up our coastline.
The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the impact of plastic waste on our environment. Australia discards a staggering 3.5 million tonnes of plastic annually, and only 12% is recycled. Sadly the rest ends up in our parks, roadsides, bush, waterways, and oceans or in landfills.
By participating in this eco-friendly action, the community came together to turn these numbers around, making a positive impact and embodying the change they wish to see.
“Plastic contaminates our air, land, sea and can enter the human body through the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe,” says Australia-based non-profit Take 3 for the Sea. “Single-use packaging and disposable items like lolly wrappers and food containers are polluting the planet. Many animals mistakenly ingest plastic believing it to be a food source.”
Clean Up Australia Day presented an occasion to engage our guests and educate children about waste concerns and sustainability, imparting the significance of recycling efforts and nurturing a more sustainable tomorrow. Simple actions can address complex problems and collectively we can make an impact.
“This marks the inaugural phase of our ‘Take 3 for the Sea’ rollout, and we are committed to expanding this environmental initiative to all five of our Holiday Parks in the Kiama area,” said Kevin Sullivan, Kiama Coast Holiday Parks Coordinator.
