The Greens have selected Fishermans Paradise resident and Shoalhaven Greens co-convenor, Debbie Killian, as the Greens candidate for Gilmore.
Killian has enjoyed a long career in senior roles in health, education and community services in the not-for-profit and public service sectors and believes the two major parties are failing everyday Australians.
“They’re failing us on climate action, they’re failing us on addressing cost of living issues, they’re failing us on acting in the interests of ordinary Australians rather than big corporate donors, and they are failing our young people who need homes and hope for the future,” she says.
“As a beautiful, but vulnerable coastal region, Gilmore urgently needs action to halt the destruction of our natural environment and to ease cost of living pressures and increasingly unaffordable housing.
“I’m standing as the Greens candidate for Gilmore to make a noise for real change.”
Killian says her diverse work background and experience on the ground with local communities have taught her that the best results are achieved when individuals and communities are involved in making decisions and plans to meet their needs.
“I have worked extensively with communities to improve access to good health, financial stability and as wide a range of life choices as possible.
“Since I moved to the Shoalhaven eight years ago, I’ve been working on the same kind of social and environmental issues and I have found the same thing. Communities know what they need but are often not listened to. Politics – especially elections – are a chance to change that.
“I would urge people not to believe that you have to keep propping up the same old structures to make things better.
“If you want change, and a better future, you need to vote for it.
“Greens’ policies such taxing big companies, winding back overly generous tax breaks on property investment, capping rent prices, developing social housing, and preventing price gouging by supermarkets are all part of a plan to put ordinary Australians first and to make their lives better.”
