Non Friable Asbestos

Asbestos has been used in the manufacture of various products. These products can be found in Friable or Non-Friable (or Bonded) form. All products are known as asbestos containing materials or ACM.

Friable asbestos products are generally quite loose and when dry can be easily crumbled into fine material or dust with very light pressure including crushing in the palm of your hand. This can result in asbestos fibres being easily released into the air and inhaled by people within close proximity.

Friable asbestos can be found in:
Sprayed insulation
Fire retardant material on steel framing
Boiler insulation
Non Friable asbestos that has been damaged by het and fire
Non Friable asbestos that has been cut with a grinder.

Non-friable or bonded asbestos are made with a bonding material such as cement. They are solid and not easily crumbled. In their solid state these materials are not dangerous unless that are disturbed or damaged.

Non friable asbestos can be found in:
Fibro sheeting
Asbestos cement moulded products
Bitumen based waterproofing
Vinyl floor tiles.
